Finding Your Voice as a Child of Immigrants

As immigrants and children of immigrants, many of us grow up navigating different expectations. We may be encouraged to pursue our own goals while also feeling deeply responsible for our families. When those priorities pull us in different directions, it can be hard to know how much room to make for our own desires and needs.

In therapy, clients and I work together to reconnect with parts of themselves they’ve set aside to get by. That might be a career they hoped to pursue, feelings they haven’t felt safe sharing, or a boundary they’ve struggled to set.

We make space for the guilt, shame, and confusion that can come with exploring these parts. We consider what choosing differently might mean, what they might gain, and what it could cost. We also make space for grief for what’s already been lost, and for the ways relationships or a sense of belonging may change.

If this sounds familiar, feel free to reach out. We can see if working together feels right.
